Des Moines, IA
To improve the quality and efficiency of its newspaper, The Des Moines Register, a Gannett-owned publication, decided to design a new production facility. This 115,000-square-foot facility contains all of the manufacturing departments necessary to produce and ship the daily newspaper.
The facility's primary purpose is to house a state-of-the-art MAN Roland Geoman press. This triple printing unit press is over 25 feet wide, 235 feet long, and 55 feet tall, weighting approximately 1,125 tons. It is one of the few in the world supported by a concrete table in lieu of the more traditional steel frame.
The facility has areas for paper rolls and insert storage, stripping, platemaking, inserting, packaging, and shipping along with support areas such as locker/shower rooms, maintenance and repair shops and administrative offices.
The unique shape of the facility was developed with Eurografica in Munich, Germany to bring a fresh concept to the printing industry and escape the traditional box-shaped newspaper plants. Shive-Hattery's role was to turn the conceptual design images into reality. Shive-Hattery developed a computerized rendering midway through the project to enable the client to take an virtual walk through the building.
