Rock Island, IL
The Rock Island Arsenal Development Group retained Shive-Hattery to perform design, bidding, and construction phase services for the renovation of Building 340 on the Rock Island Arsenal. The project was performed in two phases to convert the five room, approximately 50,000 square foot, World War I-era warehouse in to office, conference, training, production, and storage spaces for Advanced Document Conversion Company (ADC). ADC is a document scanning, storage, and retrieval service company for local governments, hospitals, and corporations.
The building renovation included asbestos abatement, interior design, and architectural and civil, structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering design services. Asbestos abatement included removing asbestos containing metal siding and the removal of windows with glazing of asbestos containing materials. Site improvements included creating parking spaces, a truck dock, truck access, walks, and landscaping, and improvements to site grading and drainage. New water, sewer, and natural gas services were extended to the building. Building envelope improvements included masonry restoration, furring out and insulating walls, window replacement, roof replacement, and replacing the north wall, which is protected by an existing canopy. The new roofing system is a fully adhered EPDM membrane system over rigid insulation and vapor barrier that was installed on the original wood deck. The large, original, wooden bay doors were salvaged and refinished to be used as space dividers in the new office and production areas. A new entrance canopy and window openings were added at the east face of the building. All windows meet blast resistance standards.
