One of the fastest-growing cities in Iowa, North Liberty has seen tremendous development in the past two decades. Incorporated in 1913, this rural farm town has grown into a bustling suburb of Iowa City, home to young families and commuters. While the town has expanded its borders with new construction, city officials are working to update dated existing neighborhoods and infrastructure.

Funded through its Road Use Tax Fund, North Liberty began a multi-phase, multi-year project to bring founding neighborhoods up to modern standards. Shive-Hattery was hired on multiple phases of this project, beginning with updating Front Street between Zeller and Cherry Streets. The road’s base is original to the town, more than 100 years old, and lined with early to mid-century homes. The asphalt road needed maintenance, the sanitary sewer and water mains were outdated, and the ditches lining the road led to poor drainage.

Shive-Hattery revitalized the area with a new concrete road with curb and gutter, modern sewer and water mains, a new storm sewer system, and wider, ADA-compliant concrete sidewalks. On a project that typically comes with lots of unknowns through design and construction, Shive-Hattery closely coordinated with residents, the contractor, and city ensuring a smooth project that unfolded on time and on budget. Completed in September 2018, the project brought this heavily-trafficked neighborhood up to the quality of life and visual standards of the surrounding area.
