Communities need a plan as they prepare for private development growth and the necessary public infrastructure improvements to support growth. An important piece of that plan is a transportation system to safely and efficiently move goods and people throughout a community. A sound transportation plan will help a community budget and prioritize improvements to facilitate growth.

Transportation plans are customized to fit each community’s needs and can range from:

• Focused future corridor plans
• City-wide long-range transportation plans
• Detailed study of alternatives for site, environmental impacts, proposed intersection types and specific private property owner impacts
• Plans using local planning organization’s data showing travel demand to prioritize street improvements based on capacity needs, future growth area opportunities and projects already identified in the capital improvement program

Plans usually address all modes of transportation, including bike lane/trail plans and transit route considerations. Public involvement is always a critical element to transportation plans.
Investing in the planning of the transportation system gives a community a sound framework to develop improvements in a feasible proactive manner. Communities can work better with private developers to identify key transportation features that are necessary to accommodate the overall plan and have a good understanding of what needs to be addressed with existing infrastructure improvements or replacements.
