The University of Iowa sought to enhance their softball facilities by transitioning Bob Pearl Field from a natural grass surface to a more resilient synthetic turf. The existing field and related areas, including the visitor bullpen, home bullpen, and batting cages, needed comprehensive reconstruction. The project also faced the additional challenge of deteriorating outfield fence posts, which were discovered mid-construction.

Shive-Hattery collaborated closely with the University’s Athletics Department and a specialized turf company to develop multiple field layout and logo options. The reconstruction involved installing synthetic turf across the entire field, bullpens, and batting cages. A sophisticated subdrainage system was integrated beneath the turf to improve drainage, ensuring the field could be used shortly after rain events. The home batting cage, previously in poor condition, was upgraded with new equipment and an additional batting tunnel as per the coach’s request. Upon discovering the deteriorated outfield fence posts, Shive-Hattery swiftly designed and collaborated with the contractor for the constructed a new, structurally sound outfield fence.

The comprehensive upgrades have transformed Bob Pearl Field into one of the premier softball facilities in the Big Ten. The new synthetic turf and improved drainage system significantly enhance playability and reduce weather-related disruptions. The modernized batting cages provide athletes with better training facilities, while the new outfield fence ensures safety and durability. These improvements not only elevate the University of Iowa’s softball program but also reinforce its commitment to providing top-tier athletic facilities.
