Shive-Hattery’s Cedar Rapids IA office is seeking a Design Professional – Structural; an early-career position with 0-3 years of experience. This position offers the opportunity to live and work in a vibrant community that values work-life balance. - Design structural solutions for industrial, commercial, and educational projects, with a primary focus on industrial sectors.
- Collaborate with experienced engineers, technicians, and multi-disciplinary teams to deliver high-quality designs for our long-standing industrial clients both locally and nationally.
- Provide support in design and drawing production within the structural discipline.
- Perform shop drawing reviews, field data collection, and field data entry.
- Handle multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
- Work under the guidance and mentorship of licensed structural engineers.
- Participate in site visits, which may require driving, climbing ladders, working on elevated platforms, and wearing PPE specific to client sites.
- Travel occasionally, including some overnight stays, as needed.

Requirements
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis on Structural Engineering.
- Experience: a recent graduate or early career Engineer Intern (EI) with 0 to 3 years experience; Previous internship skills or summer experience in engineering is advantageous
- License/Certification: Have passed or are scheduled to take the Fundamentals Of Engineering (FE) exam and designation as an Engineer Intern (EI) with interest in obtaining a Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- Completion of coursework in steel and concrete is essential; experience with wood and masonry is a plus.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with Revit, 3D software (Navisworks/Recap), structural engineering design software, and Microsoft Office is preferred.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to collaborate effectively within teams from other disciplines.
- Excellent time management, planning, and organizational skills.
- Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to present design solutions confidently.
- Master’s in Structural Engineering is preferred but not required.
- Ability to pass drug and background screenings required for work at most industrial sites.
