Shive-Hattery’s Madison WI office has an exciting opportunity for a Structural Engineer (PE) with 5-8 years of experience in the design and leadership of structural engineering projects to support our Higher Education and Healthcare team.

What You’ll Do:

In this role, you will lead structural design efforts for projects serving higher education, healthcare, industrial, and government clients, with a primary emphasis on structures that will support district energy utilities. This will include designing new structures and assessing existing ones.

You will also be responsible for leading structural design for projects that support mechanical engineers in designing steam and chilled water systems. This will primarily involve assisting in laying out supports, guides, and anchors for thermal utilities, as well as designing critical components such as operating platforms and circulation devices for maintenance access.

Collaboration will be crucial as you work with experienced engineers and technicians within multi-discipline teams. Your main focus will be on serving our long-standing higher education and healthcare clients, both locally and nationally.

Additionally, your responsibilities will include overseeing shop drawing reviews, conducting construction site observations and recordings, participating in studies related to proposed infrastructure improvements, estimating construction costs for projects under design, and collaborating with other engineers, contractors, and clients on-site to address challenges encountered during construction or discovered during an investigation.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited engineering program; Master’s degree is advantageous
  • License/Certification: licensed Professional Engineer (PE) or have the ability to obtain immediate licensure in Wisconsin. 
  • Experience: 5 to 8 years in the design & leadership of structural engineering projects; Your current experience should include structural design using concrete, steel, and masonry, with specific expertise in designing underground structures being a definite plus. Additionally, experience in designing supports for thermal utilities would be beneficial.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Preferred technical competencies include proficiency in modeling and viewing software such as Revit, Navisworks, and Recap, as well as experience with structural engineering design software like Risa, Profis, Enercalc, and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Collaboration is a key aspect of this role, so you need to demonstrate a willingness to work effectively with other disciplines and a proactive interest in understanding their design requirements to better serve clients.
  • Effective time and workload management skills are essential. This includes your ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work efficiently.
  • Practical requirements include a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle. You should also be comfortable with tasks such as climbing ladders, working on elevated platforms and open grating, and wearing necessary personal protective equipment as required by specific clients and sites. You must be able to pass drug & background screenings which are required at most client sites.
  • Attention to detail is critical in this role, and you should possess strong oral and written communication skills. You must be comfortable presenting design solutions to clients.
