Culbertson Residence Hall at Moody Bible Institute
Located in Chicago, IL
Shive-Hattery collaborated with Moody Bible Institute to reimagine the iconic Culbertson Hall, transforming this 50-year-old male dormitory into a modern residence hall that meets the evolving needs of the MBI community.
This $38 million project focused on modernizing the building’s infrastructure while creating a flexible living environment. The design allows for seamless transitions between all-male and all-female floors, adapting to the needs of MBI’s dynamic student body. Enhanced accessibility was a priority, with the addition of ADA-compliant rooms, updated wayfinding signage, and reconfigured restrooms that support diverse student demographics.
Our design approach is centered on a timeless and durable finish palette, thoughtfully blending MBI’s traditional aesthetic with a contemporary touch. Infrastructure upgrades, including new mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems, significantly improved energy efficiency and sustainability throughout the building. The reconfigured layouts transformed male restrooms into female restrooms, featuring fully enclosed stalls to ensure privacy and comfort for all users.
Respecting its historical significance as a cornerstone of campus life, Culbertson Hall’s transformation creates a welcoming and safe environment that fosters community, fellowship, and spiritual growth. These ideals are essential elements of the Moody Bible Institute experience.
