Shive-Hattery’s Cedar Rapids IA office has an exciting opportunity for a Design Professional – Structural;  an early career Structural Engineer with up to 2 years of experience to  support our Food and Pharma team.

As an early career Engineer at Shive-Hattery, you will be an integral part of our team serving our current and future clients, learn from our teams on how to service clients, and overall allow us to serve each other at an elevated level to ensure we can create a better world for all.  Because of our work, clients can be successful and serve millions of customers through the food and health products they produce. 

Throughout your role in Shive-Hattery, you can touch a variety of work, not only varying your daily but allowing you to work with various clients –  from local clients to Fortune 500 companies. 

  • Work closely with senior project and team members to support new learning and development
  • Assist with design projects for various local and nationwide clients ranging from food producers, medical manufacturing, bioscience and technology, etc. 
  • Work with experienced engineers and technicians while coordinating with multi-discipline teams. 
  • Engage in the structural design portion of projects, make design recommendations and decisions, and oversee the completion and quality of construction drawings, specifications, reports, and other project documentation. 
  • Assist with establishing and management of structural scope, schedule, and budget. 
  • Oversee shop drawing reviews, field data collections, job site observations, and field data entry

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited engineering program
  • Experience: Early career engineer with 1 to 3 years of experience; Structural design experience using concrete, steel, and masonry is expected; practical knowledge of wood is advantageous
  • License/Certification:  have passed or are scheduled to complete the Fundamentals Of Engineering (FE) exam and designation as an Engineer Intern (EI) with interest in obtaining a Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Software Skills: Microsoft Office and familiarity with Autodesk Revit 
  • Pass drug and background screenings required for work at most client sites.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to vehicle.
  • Climb ladders and work on elevated platforms and open grating.
  • Wear personal safety equipment required for specific clients and sites

 Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Valid driver’s license and access to vehicle

  • Pass drug and background screenings required for work at most client sites.
  • Experience with 3D software (Navisworks/Recap) and some structural engineering design software
  • Curious, teamwork-oriented, and interested in learning from and helping others
  • Capable of working on multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail. 
  • Experience with wood and precast is not required, but preferred
  • Manages time and workload effectively, which includes planning, organizing, and prioritizing work. 
  • Possess excellent oral and written communication skills, 
  • Comfortable presenting design solutions to project team members and project owner.
