They were awarded the top prize in the Iowa State University – Department of Architecture Shive-Hattery Design Studio Competition AND were recognized as 2020 AIA/ACSA Committee on the Environment (COTE) Top Ten winners for their submission, entitled “Bazaar 324.”
Congratulations to Anannya Das and Connor Mougin! They were awarded the top prize in the Iowa State University – Department of Architecture Shive-Hattery Design Studio Competition AND were recognized as 2020 AIA/ACSA Committee on the Environment (COTE) Top Ten winners for their submission, entitled “Bazaar 324.”
Their project, “Bazaar 324,” is a net-zero project set in an old warehouse district in downtown Memphis, Tennessee, merging new construction with adaptive reuse of an existing structure.
Juror comments:
“Bazaar 324 presents a multi layered take on the COTE measures, with an inclusionary design – much needed in the complex cultural landscapes of the American South. The project’s dynamic first floor public space fosters new integrations of society, culture, and economy, meeting the essential needs of our time skillfully creates a rich, layered, and compelling place of new and old buildings with the interesting bazaar concept binding the complex and community together. The design incorporates sophisticated passive design, acting as a filtration device for water, air, and energy. The student’s design narrative is clear and presents a poetic approach to sustainability, while making a very thoughtful and impressive economic case.”
As part of the Design Studio, Shive-Hattery architects Mark Seabold and Grant Nordby coached students throughout the semester and served as representatives of the design firm among the studio review jury.

The Shive-Hattery Design Studio is led by Ulrike Passe and supports second-year graduate architecture students in their challenge to create a net zero/energy efficient building design through the adaptive reuse of existing buildings. The studio focuses on integrating advanced systems technology and sustainable design to reflect and explore the relationship between buildings and environmental forces.
The AIA/ACSA COTE Top Ten competition recognizes ten exceptional studio projects that demonstrate designs moving towards carbon-neutral operation through creative and innovative integration of design strategies such as daylighting, passive heating and cooling, materials, water, energy generation, and sustainable systems. The program challenged students to submit projects that use a thoroughly integrated approach to architecture, natural systems, and technology to provide architectural solutions that protect and enhance the environment.
