Sands Vertical Expansion at Broadlawns Medical Center

In order to better serve patient needs, Broadlawns Medical Center underwent a 42,000 square-foot vertical expansion. This addition allowed the Medical/Surgical unit to convert from semi-private to private rooms, improve the ICU and allow their Family Birthing Unit to accommodate the community’s growing need. With this expansion, the medical center is able to further the Broadlawns mission of providing accessible, cost-effective and high quality patient care.

The design of the Family Birthing Unit has a strong focus on patient experience. The  unit has abundant glazing, nature inspired graphics throughout and a thoughtfully planned headwall to conceal medical outlet and equipment when not in use. The labor/delivery/recovery/postpartum rooms also incorporate tubs near the patient beds to allow patients to labor in water, which can reduce the need for anesthetics. When the tub is not in use, a barn door separates the tub from the patient room.
