Hawkeye Recreation Fields Upgrade

Located in Iowa City, IA

Back to projects

Over the past eight years, the natural turf fields at the Hawkeye Recreation Fields faced significant challenges, including an uneven surface, an aging and deficient irrigation system, and poor drainage. These issues resulted in hard, compacted soil and frequent waterlogged areas, leading to field closures and event cancellations. These fields’ inconsistent and unreliable conditions significantly impacted the University of Iowa Recreation Services’ ability to provide a dependable space for student activities and events.

Shive-Hattery designed and implemented a comprehensive renovation of the western 7.34 acres of the Hawkeye Recreation Fields to address these challenges, converting them to synthetic turf. This upgrade included site grading, new sidewalks, fencing enhancements, and improvements to the PA sound system, Wi-Fi coverage, and gate access. The conversion to synthetic turf provided the capability to accommodate up to six flag football fields or two soccer fields, offering versatile space for various intramural and community activities. These upgrades were part of a long-term master plan developed through years of meticulous planning.

The new synthetic turf surfacing has transformed the Hawkeye Recreation Fields into a premier facility, maximizing usage and reliability. The upgraded fields now support a wider range of activities, ensuring that events and competitions can proceed regardless of weather conditions. The enhanced amenities, such as improved sound systems and Wi-Fi, improve user experience. This project addresses the long-standing issues of uneven surfaces and poor drainage. It aligns with the University of Iowa’s commitment to providing top-tier recreational facilities for its students and the broader community.
