The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) Emergency Power Facility project is the recipient of the 2017 AIA Iowa Excellence in Design Merit Award.

UIHC had numerous generators in buildings on its campus that were nearing the end of their useful life.

A remote generator plant was designed for the University of Iowa’s West Campus. As UIHC brings new facilities online, including Children’s Hospital and Hospital Parking Ramp 2, backup power is being provided from this remote facility. Additionally, modifications were made to the existing John Pappajohn Pavilion essential power systems so they could be powered from the remote generator facility. Future project phases also include installing backup power capacity to replace generators in existing facilities as they are decommissioned.

This plant provides backup power for the critical operations for the UIHC facilities. In the event of power system failure or as building power systems are decommissioned, power will be maintained.
